When my son was first diagnosed with Autism I went through a wide range of emotions. I was uncertain about how it would impact him, how it would effect his future, his friendships, his life. I wanted to make sure I did everything I could to help him achieve his potential but I wasn’t sure where to start. I worried about whether I was doing the right things to help him and I struggled to find resources that could help. He is a teenager and I still have some of those same worries but he doing well. I am amazed by his strength and his ability to overcome the challenges he faces each day.
Now, I work as pre-k special education teacher for children with Autism. I interact with parents each day that share the same concerns that I once had. Many of my parents and families have only recently received the news that their child may have Autism. They are experiencing a wide range of emotions but most have one thing in common, they just want to help their child. Many parents share the same questions and concerns that I once did. What can I do to help my son/daughter? Is this school/class the best place for them? What resources are available to help? How can I help them learn at home? It’s easy to become overwhelmed and it can be hard to know where to go for answers.
I hope to provide resources and information that can support children with Autism and their families. I hope my experiences and knowledge as a parent and teacher will be able to help make a difference for someone who might be struggling with the same questions and concerns that I once had. I don’t have all the answers, but I am always striving to learn more, to find new information, so I can ensure that every child receives the support they need to reach their full potential.
